Understanding color contrast in Minup

Color contrast describes how easy it is to see text and other important elements against their background. Good contrast makes your booking page easier to read for everyone, including people with visual impairments.

Minup automatically checks the contrast of your selected brand color to help keep your booking page readable.

What do the contrast values mean?

Contrast is shown as a ratio, such as 4.5:1, 3:1 or 2:1. The higher the first number, the stronger the difference between the colors and the easier they are to distinguish.

For example, black text on a white background has very high contrast, while light gray text on a white background has low contrast.

Accessibility guidelines known as WCAG define different levels of recommended color contrast. The commonly used AA standard generally requires at least 4.5:1 for normal-sized text and 3:1 for large text and many important interface elements.

Minup uses the following limits when you select a brand color:

  • 3:1 or higher: Good contrast. No warning is displayed.

  • Between 2:1 and 3:1: ⚠️ Minup displays a warning, but you can still save the color. Some elements may be harder to see.

  • Below 2:1: ❌ The contrast is too low, so Minup won't let you save the color.

Being allowed to save a color in Minup does not necessarily mean that it meets the WCAG AA standard in every situation. We recommend aiming for 3:1 or higher whenever possible.

What should I do if my contrast is too low?

You can adjust your brand color in Settings → Appearance → Custom theme.

If your booking page uses a light theme, try choosing a darker brand color. If it uses a dark theme, try choosing a lighter brand color.

You don't need to calculate the contrast yourself. Minup checks it automatically as you choose your color, so you can simply adjust the color until the warning disappears.

A small change in brightness is often enough to improve readability while keeping the color close to your original brand color.
